Immunological Studies in Bronchial Asthma
نویسنده
چکیده
Immunology is the study of the body’s defence mechanism against disease. Immunoglobulins are proteins produced by plasma cells and lymphocytes and are characteristic of these cells. They play essential role in the body’s immune system by attaching to the foreign substance like bacteria. Bronchial asthma is a syndrome with a variety of disorders of the bronchi and is associated with the allergic hypersensitivity to certain allergens. Immunoglobulin E (IgE) is a class of immunoglobulin that includes the antibodies ellucited by an allergic substance (allergen). Asthma caused due to allergens was found to be more prevalent amongst males(65%) than in female (35%). The mean IgE values were significantly increased in the asthmatics, almost 20 times high value of IgE were observed as compared to healthy controls. Also high IgE levels were observed in males as compared to the females in the same age group. Both these findings are suggestive that IgE plays as important role in the detection and prevalence of allergic asthma.

Role of Estrogen Receptor-Alpha in an Experimental Model of Bronchial Asthma
Background: Use of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) may increase the risk of adult-onset asthma in women. Various in vitro studies have reported that estradiol stimulates human mast cell lines causing release of allergic mediators which was not observed in estrogen receptor-alpha (ER-alpha) knockout mice. Thus, estrogen might be a key element in occurrence of asthma. In the present study, we p...
متن کاملBronchial epithelium in children: a key player in asthma.
Bronchial epithelium is a key element of the respiratory airways. It constitutes the interface between the environment and the host. It is a physical barrier with many chemical and immunological properties. The bronchial epithelium is abnormal in asthma, even in children. It represents a key component promoting airway inflammation and remodelling that can lead to chronic symptoms. In this revie...
متن کامل[Asthma and allergic rhinitis as symptoms of the same disease: a paradigm under construction].
OBJECTIVE To describe current ideas about the relation between upper and lower respiratory tract and to review the epidemiological, immunological, and pathological aspects that support the paradigm of united airways disease. SOURCES Literature review using the Medline, MD Consult, HighWire, Medscape and Lilacs databases. We used allergic rhinitis and asthma as keywords, and searched articles ...
متن کاملHuman platelet antigen polymorphism in bronchial asthma
Background: Asthma is recognized as a common cause of disability, of great economic cost, and of preventable deaths. In this study we aimed to test our hypothesis to evaluate the relationship between the Human Platelet Antigen-1(HPA-1) polymorphism and bronchial asthma and its severity, which would suggest genetic variances that may be responsible for expression or activation of these receptors...
متن کاملA Study on Clinical Efficacy of Lepidium Sativum Seeds in Treatment of Bronchial Asthma
The present investigation was carried out to determine the efficacy and safety of Lepidium sativum (L. sativum) (Garden Cress, Fam: Cruciferae) in patients of bronchial asthma. L. sativum seed powder was given at a dose of 1 gm thrice a day orally to 30 patients of either sex in the range of 15-80 years with mild to moderate bronchial asthma without any concurrent medication. The respiratory fu...
